Micro veins are often connected with larger collateral veins and sometimes even with the saphenous vein. There are 2 main theories on the development of varicose veins. Micro veins have valves. There are studies that suggest that these veins are directly linked to the progression of varicose veins. The ascending theory considers that the disease in the smaller veins is progressive and deteriorates larger veins. The ascending theory considers that the valves of the larger veins are progressively damaging that of the smaller veins due to the pressure column. Both theories are probably complementary.
The importance of this is that the treatment should aim at resolving the condition as a whole, not just focusing on what is currently seen.
